Amelia Westlake By Erin Gough Book Review
OH MY GOSH WHAT IS THIS BEAUTY!!!
I’m not kidding when I say those words because my goodness Amelia Westlake was WONDERFUL! An absolute joy to read! I must admit thought when I first received this in the mail I was skeptical thinking “Ugh! It’s going to be another boring contemporary novel” (as you can see I’m not a fan of contemporary) but I picked it up and read it regardless for my book club.
AND I AM SO GLAD I DID!
There are not that many books that get body image and “favouritism” at school right but this one just excelled at it! Basically the book was centred around a girl named Harriet who seemingly has a perfect life: she lives in a mansion and has a smart and beautiful girlfriend. But when she employs the help of Will, the bad-girl troublemaker of the school to expose the school’s many issues, she finds herself finding it hard to find Will her enemy. As the stakes get raised how far would both Harriet and Will go to secretly advocate for change and to keep their feelings for each other hidden?
IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST PAGE! I WAS HOOKED!
The pacing was amazing, the characters were amazing and the whole way the author Erin Gough addressed such issues were not confronting but put in a way that it simply “flowed” in the story. It had a strong theme and moral to “never be afraid to speak your mind” and “never be afraid to speak out” which is such a crucial and important thing for society of nowadays to know and understand and I appreciated Gough writing something so meaningful.
I also loved the romance obviously and the character dynamics of Harriet and Will. To be specific I loved how different they were and how even as you were reading the book you could tell each characters voice. It’s a skill that I don’t see that often and I think should definitely be used more in YA nowadays.
All in all, It was a beautiful novel and just as beautifully written.
