An Analysis of how I make my "Actual Ratings" on Inside A Dog.
ACTUAL RATING: 3.8 STARS
ACTUAL RATING: 4.9 STARS
ACTUAL RATING: 4.1 STARS
You’ve seen it all if you read my book reviews… my “actual ratings”… you’re probably wondering WHAT THE HELL IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 4.9 STARS AND 5 STARS!!!!!!! WHY DID YOU RATE IT 4.9????
Well here is a time where I can just discuss what the heck goes on behind my ratings.
First of all, what features does a good book have?
For me a good book should have:
-good characters (relatable, funny, unpredictable, I want to bear hug them, 3D (is very humane, has feelings and has more to them that meets the eye, depth), diverse characters not just in appearance but in the way they react to situations)
-Good plot: We want something gripping… something that would make our jaw drops at the twist and keep us at the edge of our seats. I’m looking for a good transition from A to B instead of a massive jump from A to B. I want a tension build up and suspense!!
-World Building: I should imagine what the world looks like. World building is critical in Fantasy books for example you want to write about a magical Elvish land well tell me how that land looks like!! Even with romance books or contemporary set in New York present day you can describe to me how it looks with “roaming skyscrapers overlooking the city like gods over believers.” I don’t care I want to see it in my head!
-Writing: And that my friends is what wraps the present up! The writing style must go well with the story. Don’t tell me “Sarah sees Nick. Her heart beats as they make eye contact.” show me don’t tell me. Tell me how Sarah is feeling through making an image for the reader to read. “Her heart fluttered as rapidly as the beat of a dragonfly’s wing…” See? So now the reader can imagine her heart beating fast! and your writing doesn’t seem like an old science teacher talking about monohybrid crosses *eyerolls*
So here are my ratings: The bold are like the main jist of my actual rating.
0 STARS: DONT GET ME STARTED ON THIS BOOK GET IT OUT OF MY FACE! I NEVER WANT TO SEE THE COVER AGAIN! THE WRITING MAKES MY EYEBALLS BLEED!!!!!!
1 STARS: This book did nothing for me… it was boring and I didn’t agree with the story. The characters were boring and I had no connection to them. I won’t read it again.
1.1 STARS: I’m sorry for everyone who has to read this.
1.2 STARS: *puts book to side and reads another one*/<— really tempted to do that
1.3 STARS: Boring and wouldn’t recommend it nor read it again.
1.4 STARS: I was bored from page 1
1.5 STARS: The movie is better
1.6 STARS: *groans through every page*
1.7 STARS: Feeling no joy reading any of it.
1.8 STARS: Massive eyeroll of a book
1.9 STARS: Book was boring… characters were uninteresting (not okay but ehhh I can deal with the pain)
2 STARS: The book was boring… the characters were okay. It wasn’t awful but I wouldn’t pick it up straight away for a second read
2.1 STARS: Everything dragging on for a long while. Characters were still okay but mmmm….
2.2 STARS: Might not be my cup of tea
2.3 STARS: I’m being generous but honestly playing sport is more fun than reading this
2.4 STARS: Didn’t engage as much as e.g., a four star book
2.5 STARS: Big “MEH”
2.6 STARS: The book could’ve been better….
2.7 STARS: It could’ve been an average book but still… there was something off/missing about it.
2.8 STARS: It was average but still the book was long and boring
2.9 STARS: Basically average. Didn’t *DO* anything for me or made me feel anything for the characters.
3 STARS: Meh… pretty average. I can see why other people like it but it’s just a normal read for me.
3.1 STARS: Basically unfazed
3.2 STARS: It was okay
3.3 STARS: I’ll read the sequel again just not straight after I finished it the first time
3.4 STARS: the book was okay I just didn’t like the overall vibe of it
3.5 STARS: I liked the book’s vibes but *insert one of the 4 “good book” features above* was done better than some of the other parts (A good book should have all 4)
3.6 STARS: maybe 2 of the 4 good book features were done well…
3.7 STARS: Yeah I liked it <3
3.8 STARS: It was an easy read but it didn’t make the “OH MY GOD” factor -_-
3.9 STARS: I can see why people really like it and don’t get me wrong I do like it… I just won’t follow fan pages and jump into fandom wars for it…
4 STARS: I like this… the characters are people I can relate to and I really like the writing and world building too.
4.1 STARS: It had all the aspects of a good book and I can see why people are so hyped about it but there’s just something missing…
4.2 STARS: I really enjoyed it and I would read it again. Not my favourite book but I did enjoy the ride!
4.3 STARS: If I read it again maybe I’d like it a lot <3
4.4 STARS: I really got into this one!
4.5 STARS: Hit me right in the feels!! I really loved this book might be my favourite book for a month or two
4.6 STARS: I liked the book a lot but it hasn’t been constantly on my mind. I would re-read though!
4.7 STARS: This author if she/he/they continue down this path I think they’d be J.K Rowling level! I think they are up to great things. I would happily read it again/the sequel
4.8 STARS: I need the sequel. I’ll happily read this book again <3
4.9 STARS: I would read this again and again and again and I would READ fan fiction and maybe write some too…. I really liked the characters and plot, writing and world building!
5 STARS: I WOULD WRITE FAN FICTION ON THIS, DRAW FAN ART AND FRICKIN’ MAKE A FANPAGE ON INSTAGRAM THE WORLD MUST KNOW THE AWESOMENESS OF THIS BOOK!!!! I SHALL KISS THE COVER AND SHIP LITERALLY EVERY CHARACTER!!!!
Anyway hope that sort of helped most of my book reviews are based off of my instincts though. If I’m feeling the book deserved a 2.6 or a 3.5 then I’ll rate it that. 🙂
