The very confusing world of Cassandra Clare

Hello there!!

So we all heard “Cassandra Clare” this and “Cassandra Clare” that on this site and well it’s clear that there is a lot of fans who hype it up but what about those people who never read the series before? It might be a bit confronting looking up on Goodreads and seeing all these series written by her and not knowing where to even start.

The original “order” of the books to read is just really confusing: *AHEM* look here: This is from Cassandra Clare’s Goodreads page see this is even making me nervous.

* City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1)
* City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments #2)
* City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments #3)
* Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)
* City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments #4)
* Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2)
* City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments, #5)
* Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices, #3)
* City of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments, #6)
* The Bane Chronicles (#1-11)
* Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy (#1-10)
* Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1)
* Lord of Shadows (The Dark Artifices #2)

To make things easier I have my own ideal order. I think this would be the ideal way to read them but keep in mind that some series haven’t been released yet.

NOTE: Blurbs are taken from Goodreads!!

The Infernal Devices

BOOK 1: Clockwork Angel

In a time when Shadowhunters are barely winning the fight against the forces of darkness, one battle will change the course of history forever. Welcome to the Infernal Devices trilogy, a stunning and dangerous prequel to the New York Timesbestselling Mortal Instruments series.

The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organisation of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, the Club is out to rule the British Empire, and only Tessa and her allies can stop them…

BOOK 2: Clockwork Prince

BOOK 3: Clockwork Princess

The Last Hours (RELEASED IN 2019!!)

The Last Hours is a new Shadowhunters series set in 1903. It deals with the next generation after Will, Tessa and Jem as well as Charlotte and Henry’s children, Tatiana Blackthorn’s children, the Lightwood kids, and many more. 1903 is right around the time the Victorian era tips over into the Edwardian era — beautiful clothes, fabulous history and so much more that I’m excited to write about!

The books will interconnect with The Dark Artifices trilogy as two separate trilogies that are also the stories of the Blackthorns, Herondales and Carstairs, much like TMI and The Infernal Devices interconnected despite taking place in different time periods and locations.

– Cassandra Clare

BOOK 1: Chain of Gold

For as long as Lucie Herondale can remember, the Herondale family manor has adjourned the manor of the Blackthorns.

It’s too bad that Tatiana Blackthorn, the matriarch of the family, has always been, as her father Will Herondale says, “mad as a mouse trapped in a teapot.” Since the day that her father Benedict murdered Tatiana’s husband, and was killed in turn by a group of Shadowhunters that included both her brothers, Tatiana has nursed a burning grudge against the London Institute and all its inhabitants, especially Will, Tessa and their children: Lucie and her brother, James…

BOOK 2: Chain of Iron

BOOK 3: Chain of Thorns

The Mortal Instruments

BOOK 1: City of Bones

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know…

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare’s ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

BOOK 2: City of Ashes

BOOK 4: City of Fallen Angels

BOOK 5: City of Lost Souls

“Over the years writing the Shadowhunter books, Magnus Bane has emerged as one of the most fun and fascinating characters for me to bring to life,” Clare says in a release. “He’s always had a lot of secrets — there are so many things we don’t know about Magnus, from the story of his first love to the secrets of his parentage, to the beginning of his relationship with Alec. All those are things I was able to touch on in The Bane Chronicles, but I’m excited to dig in even more deeply in these three volumes devoted to Magnus, his past, his future, and his present.”

BOOK 1: The Red Scrolls of Magic

From #1 New York Times bestseller Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu comes the first book in a new trilogy featuring the centuries-old High Warlock Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood after they survive the Mortal War.

The first adult novel set within #1 New York Times bestselling author Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter series, written with award-winning science fiction author Wesley Chu, is a fantasy thriller that will give new readers a great way to enter the Shadowhunters world and give the millions of readers across the globe answers they’ve been looking for in this start of The Eldest Curses trilogy.

In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.

parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.

Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.

Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. BOOK 2: Lord of Shadows

BOOK 3: Queen of Air and Darkness

The Wicked Powers (Out in 2022)

BOOK 1: Untitled

Cassandra Clare said that she will publish another trilogy in the Shadowhunters’ world after the Dark Artifices and The TLH trilogy. It will have two main characters, Kit and Ty Blackthorn. More information to come…

Cassandra Clare said about writing more books in the Shadowhunter World:

My plan at the moment is to do five Shadowhunter series, total. I don’t know if I’ll do any series in the Shadowhunter world beyond that. I don’t know why five exactly — maybe because one of my major literary idols has always been Tamora Pierce and she did five series set in Tortall. 🙂 Maybe I think I have five stories to tell in this world. Maybe I’ll get to the end and want to tell more. Maybe not — I have a stockpile of other worlds and stories in my head; I’m writing one of them by writing Magisterium now, but there are many others.

There is a special sort of enjoyment in developing stories in a created world, because you can take the rules you yourself have invented, and bend them or break them. You can create connections and history — the story of Isabelle’s ruby necklace stretches back all the way to Vampires, Scones and Edmund Herondale. Then again, with a brand new world, you get to make everything up again. It’s like: brand-new baby or adorable five-year old? They’re both good.

(The five Shadowhunter series are TiD, TLH, TMI, TDA, and very far down the road, TWP. Don’t even ask about that one! It’s too far in the future! There are other Shadowhunter projects like The Bane Chronicles and the graphic novel project about the Circle, currently in planning stages and known as TST, but I’m not counting them: I’m only counting book series/trilogies written solely by me.)

BOOK 2: Untitled

BOOK 3: Untitled

Here are the novellas. They are not essential to the series but they might help to understand the world better or side characters lives.

Bane Chronicles

Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy

Shadowhunter Codex

Ghosts of the Shadow Market

Anyways I hope that helped you out. That’s just what I think the order is. I know there are SO many Cassandra Clare books and they all are worth the binge read!

Personally, I suggest reading TMI first.
Then TID and TDA.
Then it's up to you.

5th May, 18

lol I guess it depends on what you want to read first I guess TMI and TID can be read before or after one another but for TDA you definitely need to read TMI before you read it.

5th May, 18

Haha I started with TID before TMI because the series was shorter.. Yes, that was the only reason

19th May, 18

Lol. I thought that you had to start with TMI before TID. I only got the hint that TID came before TMI when reading City of Ashes ;P
