Twilight (Twilight Saga #1) By Stephenie Meyer Book Review

Twilight isn’t that bad.

There I said it. It isn’t. I didn’t mind it. In fact, I enjoyed it. And I know I KNOW I’d get some hate for my review because everyone says“eww… Twilight is pain. Why put yourself through that level of torture” but in reality I do like Twilight and I’m not ashamed to say it. They say it’s all lovey-dovey and gross (I’m pretty sure this relates to the whole romance thing) but specifically in this book it wasn’t over-the-top done and despite everything Meyer didn’t have as many clichés as originally thought.

If we are looking specifically at Twilight it doesn’t have a love-triangle or insta-love (eventually it does involve a love triangle.) It does have enemies-to-lovers but it’s done pretty subtly between Bella and Edward. If I had to criticise the book I’d have to say that the romance was a tad bit quick but it didn’t bother me too much that I wanted to scratch my eyeballs out of my face. The writing wasn’t that bad. Seriously it wasn’t. Bella used eloquent language to tell the reader her feelings and thoughts and it wasn’t annoying, it was just her narrative and her point of view.

Meyer’s got heaps of criticism on feminism and how Bella is portrayed as “damsel-in-distress” I agree with Meyer’s response that she wrote in Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined Bella acted like a human would. Vampires around her are immortal, fast and deadly. if you were a human you literally wouldn’t be able to compete with that level of ruthlessness. I don’t think it’s fair to make assumptions that Twilight is anti-feminism though. DISCLAIMER: Hear me out here I do support feminism and I’m against the whole damsel-in-distress/boy-saves-girl-because-girl-is-too-weak sort of thing. I’m not trying to defend any books which have this message however I believe that assumptions have been made about Twilight. If you have these kind of views about Twilight I’m not meaning to offend and we can agree to disagree however I believe this point needs to be made

But another thing that makes Twilight seem like a bad book is the vampires.

All the vampires sparkle in the sunlight which may seem more fae than traditional vampires would. Vampires are depicted as blood drinking (they were in this book), coffin-sleeping and would burn in the sun. None of that mystery or suspense was in Twilight and I guess that’s why so many people were disappointed. One thing that did tick me off with this was that the vampires apparently had to move as people realised that the Cullens didn’t age. Don’t they have movie makeup stuff that you can use? It’s about $1000 for effective makeup but I think it would be a great economical investment for Carlisle, Esme, Alice, Emmett, Rosalie, Jasper and Edward 😉

All in all, Twilight isn’t that bad. I had fun, I’d read the sequel (I read the sequel before and let’s face it New Moon is the best twilight book of the saga!)
